Hi.  I agree - I love rich colors.  Even if my painting does not turn out exactly as I intended, I am more happy with it if I like the colors.

I do add water to my paint.  I generally use a thicker, buttery type of Acrylic paint and add a little water to get a smooth consistency.  If painting flowers or water, I sometimes use an acrylic medium instead of water.  I read somewhere that this creates a smoother texture, so I am trying it out.

I really use a variety of brushes and experiment with what will work, but I usually start out with a bigger round or filbert brush to block in the main shapes and then use smaller or more textured brushes for more detail.  I use rounds, filberts, flats, liners and occasionally a fan or foliage brush.  Whatever seems to give me the shape I am trying to create.

I keep a piece of scrap paper next to my painting and experiment with strokes and color mixes briefly before painting on the finished project.  It helps me to get an effect that I am more pleased with.

How about you - what types of paint and brushes do you use? I like the bright color in your work and remember you said that you paint to music and it sounds like colors flow off your brush!  I would like to be more like that.

Hi Cheyenne;

I appreciate your kind words about my painting, but I want you to know that I am still very much learning to paint, as well.  It is a process that goes on for a while - perhaps our whole lives.

As far as copying the painting goes, if you think it will help you, please go ahead.  Just to share my experience in this area, I have found it a better learning experience to work from a photo of a different scene, but observe the techniques that other painters use to get the effect that I am looking for. The photo helps me to get the correct light and values that may not be as evident in the painting.  I found that I really moved ahead faster when I used photos for some reason.  Just my experience, but wanted to share it.
