Traveling with an Artist perspective

As many of you know, I am new to painting, and it amazes me how it has changed how I view things.

We traveled from Northern Michigan to Southern Alabama. The journey took us through Kentucky and Tennessee, the area that is full of foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I found myself looking at the scenery and asking how would I paint it. I also paid more attention to the shades and tones that presented themselves with the changing position of the sun.

There was one…

A different perspective on painting

I have spent the day painting, but not on canvas, on my dining room walls. My wife and I had used the hangers advertised on TV that you can pull the tab and it will come right off. Well it did, along with the paint on the wall.

I went to the store to get some paint, and could not find the original color, willow leaf. I had to get spring willow leaf which looked like a close match.

Two new experiences with painting

I had two wonderful experiences this week with my new hobby, painting that I want to share.

Second attempt at Blue Mountain view bombed

I attempted my second expression of Blue Mountain View yesterday, and totally bombed it. However I do know that with each painting there are lessons to be learned, and improvements as a painter can be gained

In my second attempt I totally blew it on my values. The farthest mountains looked more like the sky, and the closest looked like just a blob of color. The two lessons I learned from this experience is:

Pay better attention to the values and how to properly contrast them to…

Why did I start painting?

I have never been one who has demonstrated great, or even moderate levels of artistic ability. I cannot look at a detailed picture and replicate it like a truly talented artist. I have often envied people that have such a remarkable talent

However, I would find myself looking at a tree in full bloom, and I would ask myself "How would I paint that tree? I mentioned this to my wife, and she bought me a beginner's paint set for Christmas 2016. So I have started painting, and really…
