"Wow, how gorgeous! Every little detail has been brought to life. You must steady hands like a surgeon to get all of those clapboards and shingles so straight and perfectly shadowed. It's an impressive piece!"

Sandy Weems replied to Sandy Weems's discussion Question: Pre-Primed Canvases
"Ah--good to know that. I guess I haven't painted on enough canvases to know exactly what I "like" texture-wise--but to know that I  probably "need" more gesso for something with a lot of detail helps. Thank you, Karen!"

"Wow, Charles, thanks very much for the in-depth information!  I really appreciate it. I will pick up some sealer for my "real" attempts, i.e. anything that is not just practice. I will take a look at your member page, too. Thanks…"

Charles Eisener replied to Sandy Weems's discussion Question: Pre-Primed Canvases
"Hi Sandy! I have posted previously a blog on preparing substrates, but in a nutshell: Unless you are buying professional canvas (with its premium price),  you have no way to know if the manufacturer prep is decent quality.  With oils this…"

Karen Ilari replied to Sandy Weems's discussion Question: Pre-Primed Canvases
"Only if you want to have a really smooth surface to paint on. For myself, I like to have some texture to the canvas - especially for landscapes. I don't do any further gesso. The only time I might is if I were doing a portrait or working in a…"

"Thanks so much, Karen! I really enjoyed the challenge of painting on the (to me) tiny canvas. And of course I adore my subject. :)"

Profile Information

How long have you been painting? Doing any kind of art?
The first time I picked up a brush was summer of 2015. As an educator, I seem only to manage painting during summer breaks (so far), so I keep having to relearn what little I knew the summer before! Other than doodling, acrylic on paper--and now three canvases!--has been my only attempt at art.
What other mediums have you used?
None
Are their specific things you would like to learn?
My painting is "too tight" -- nothing like the lovely, free strokes in your work. I want to paint realistically, but create softer images and stop freaking out about every blade of grass. :) I seem hopelessly unable to mix good greens. My paintings seem too cartoon-ish in color. Even though I understand the principle of a light source and shading, I have no idea how to mix colors to shade properly.
Where did you learn about this website?
I happily stumbled upon your YouTube videos.
