"Hello Ruth; I can't really add to the great advice and information that your received from Charles and Karen - but I wanted to say that I, too, really like your painting.  I think you have a wonderful style. If you decide to make any…"

"Thank you so much for your comments Karen. I am chuffed that you like my painting and that you can see different things in it. After 40 odd years working, I have recently retired and painting is giving me a happy place and the opportunity to play…"

"I love this Ruth! I have pretty much zero experience or expertise in abstract. Though I do know, as Charles mentioned that you do need a solid composition, focal point (Center of Interest) and a path for the eye to follow. To me this borders on…"

"I like the piece you have posted and somewhat taken back that you have such limited time painting.  Not what one would expect!  You seem to have avoided many of the typical "beginner" errors and approaches. I have extended…"

"Hello again Charles. I agree with all you say. First off I will try to darken the lower right corner rather than inverting the painting. When I did turn it the bird/plane whatever you think it is, looked more like a low flying seagull - another…"

"I think if the current bottom were darkened, you would lose a lot more than you stand to gain.  The soft central area works really well here.  An option may be to consider darker values in the right lower corner, perhaps roughly following…"

"Gosh Charles, what a comprehensive response - thank you. I just know I am going to learn heaps through this forum. First off, I have discovered the problem of uploading. The line with Link, small photo etc does not show when using the iPad. I had an…"

"Hi Ruth!  Thanks for posting! I'm not sure you lost the focal point here, but instead have multiple focal points.  Maybe the end result is the same .  .    .  Focal point is actually a photographic…"

Lost my focal point!

Hello- I started to paint about 2 months ago. After a few trials I find I prefer using acrylic paint and doing semi abstract work. I paint alone and often feel a painting needs to be 'jooshed up' a bit when it could be finished, so have ruined many by wildly splashing around colour to try to do this. I also scrub off and am sometimes amazed about happy accidents! In the excellent notes on critiquing, you mention focal point, values etc but how does that apply to abstract work? I would love to…See More

I have extended an invite to be a Friend on Karen's site.  The primary advantage to this is that we could send private comments on pieces that we might not wish to be general content; messages are not open to the general membership.  In context, after almost two years on the site, I have six or seven members that are on my friends list.
