I am curious...Do you paint on an easel, drafting type table or table? Most of the classes I have been exposed to begin with an easel. I am in the habit of having my reference photo on a table with…Continue

"Reflections are a lot of fun. Like anything else you might want to paint, the key is to not think of it as a thing. A reflection, an apple, a person. Instead just look for the shapes, values and colors. Then you can painting anything!"

"Mike, I love your use of color. Very nice. I always paint my reflections, then re-paint and re-paint and find that I am going darker and darker, then almost find where the light reflects off the darkness and "add" a few spots of light back…"

"Hi Micki! I totally agree with Charles. In composing, what you leave out is as important as what you leave in! Also, in my experience you want to be careful with elements that are hard to identify. The dried apple chips fall into that category! If…"

"Thanks for your recent comments Micki. I did the falling snow on the cabin in snow painting by using fluid white acrylic paint and a toothbrush. The size of the oil painting is only 9" x 12". Cheers, Wanda"

Profile Information

How long have you been painting? Doing any kind of art?
Picked up a brush 2 years ago for the first time since high school. Online learning has opened up a new world for me. I have recently moved to Phoenix and want to start painting regularly again. I am enjoying the work being shared here and the positive environment.
What other mediums have you used?
Acrylics have been my only medium since I started in 2015. I am hoping to try oils soon. I love the look of pastels, just not ready to venture too far right now.
Are their specific things you would like to learn?
Learning balance and perspective in landscape painting. Trying to work with different "styles" to develop my own. I love still life painting and the use of light. I feel a call to paint people and I am terrified!
Where did you learn about this website?
Found it online...so glad I did.

Welcome to Karen's site Micki and thank you for your lovely comments on my work. I have been very remiss on working in acrylic lately, but for the past few years it has been my favourite medium and I will continue painting with acrylics...I especially like doing mixed media acrylic painting.

As to your question about "...am I new to pastel..." Yes, I am. I tried doing a couple of paintings a few years back from lessons, but I had inexpensive hard pastels to work with and found them so chalky and dusty. Then about a month or so ago I tried again, but this time I purchased some softer professional pastels (unfortunately they are very expensive for us Canadians...I think they are much cheaper in the U.S.) I purchased mine through Amazon.ca even though they came from England and were made in Holland and France. Anyway I am thrilled with them and totally love working in this medium. If you do decide to try this medium I suggest watching lots of soft pastel videos. That's where I learned how to use them. Karen Margulis, Bethany Fields, Lindy Whitton and Monet Cafe are great ones to learn from.

As for acrylics Karen Ilair is a wonderful teacher, very gracious in sharing her knowledge and you should really watch her videos. I've learned a lot from her wonderful acrylic painting site.

Cheers, Wanda
