9x12 acrylic. My first landscape. No matter how squinty I get, I just can't find value changes in the reference photo, and it shows on the painting. Too ambitious for a first timer, I think.…Continue

Where do you paint?

Posted on July 25, 2015 at 6:35am 15 Comments

I am a true beginner. Aside from a few abstract pieces when I was "playing with color" and getting used to the feel of the brush on canvas, I have never painted anything before. No classes. Nothing. So being inspired by Karen and all the talented and encouraging members here, I searched for a photo that spoke to me, and gave it a try. It has turned out very "folky" because I have not mastered values at all. And that is okay! It is an autum landscape with so much color it is crazy; very… Continue

Hi KC, thanks for the very, very nice comment on my bookshop sketch. To answer your question about the ink, I used a waterproof Deluxe Micro Uni-ball pen. I use waterproof pens and/or waterproof ink with a dip pen when I want to just add watercolour as my wash. When I want to do an ink wash, I use water soluble pens and/or water soluble ink and dip pen. Took me a while experimenting with different pens to find the right combo for me. Give it a try...lots of fun. Cheers, Wanda

Hi K.C. from across the sea.

I too am teaching myself, and at times I feel lost but I keep on plodding. Couldn't be without the challenges painting brings now! Good luck. Wendy
