"Mike, I love your use of color. Very nice. I always paint my reflections, then re-paint and re-paint and find that I am going darker and darker, then almost find where the light reflects off the darkness and "add" a few spots of light back…"
Lovely! You have really pushed the color in this one. It gives it a very lighthearted feel. Nice!
As far as the reflections. You want to keep the strokes looser than the element they are reflecting.
I find the best way is to use vertical…"
"hi Mike! thanks for posting this. i also have a problem with reflected water. i would love to see the pointers you get. Personally i think yours look great :)i do think that the refection of the bridge posts should be somewhat muted in color, it…"
""Gathering Storm" is an acrylic that I just finished. Reference photo is my own and it is a painting of the Susquehanna River bridge at Wrightsville PA, where I grew up. I am still trying to master reflections so I will…"
"Just flattery here Madeleine, as I haven't developed that critical eye Karen has. She has helped me grow so much as a painter with her forthrightness in her observations. And I never feel destroyed. On the contrary, I feel…"
"Mike, sorry I missed this when you posted the update! Really nice! I love all the changes you made. This is a real beauty!
So here's a couple of ideas. Playing around in PhotoShop
First, remember that shadows will bend and change according the…"
"Great painting Mike. I love the light and shadows. Just enough detail in the brush that my eyes can fill in the rest. There is way more depth to your painting than I see in the reference photo. Nice."
"I really like your changes,, Mike. The lovely flowers draw me in and I feel I can travel the path toward the light without distraction. It was lovely to start with but I do think the changes have made it even better! I have found…"
"Sarah and Karen, Thank you for the tips. This "do-over" incorporates most of your advice. I added more "bulk" to the shadows and defined them better. I added foreground flowers in different reds and blues.…"
How long have you been painting? Doing any kind of art?
Five Years. I received a cancer diagnosis prior to that and I find that painting is the perfect therapy for me. I have no background in art prior to that. I mostly do landscapes and seascapes.
What other mediums have you used?
Graphite and charcoal sketching.
Are their specific things you would like to learn?
Glazing techniques, water surfaces, composition, light, knife work.
Where did you learn about this website?
I took a tutorial from Karen on a craft site and I liked her style and teaching method. It was a tutorial where her neighborhood was the painting subject. I liked the thought processes that went into her painting. I have since watched YT videos of Karen and then I discovered this site. To me, she is to acrylics what Bob Ross was to oils.
Thank you for the friend request Mike. Also, thank you for your kind words. I picked up my brushes in March of 2013 to begin studying and learning. Now I have begun my 3rd year. Too much fun! How about you? This is not your 1st rodeo judging from the quality of your work!?! Grins,
