The colour charts are a great place to start! It can be quite an eye opener to discover just how many different hues and shades one can create with just a few select tube colours.
I made mine with heavy multi-media paper (from a pad), which I coated with a clear sealer to make it less absorbent. Cut down to 8.5 x 11 they fit into page protectors for easy storage and reference. This is a lot cheaper and less bulky than using more rigid commercial products for the base.
