I have used watercolor paper, canvas board, and canvas. Each has some advantages and disadvantages. I have just purchased a 4' X 8' piece of Masonite at Lowes for $7.80. They cut it for me into 10" X…Continue

"Wonderful job capturing the light feel of the piece.  I think a wise person said that good art imitates life and great art captures it.  You have good life here, "

Surfaces

I have used watercolor paper, canvas board, and canvas. Each has some advantages and disadvantages. I have just purchased a 4' X 8' piece of Masonite at Lowes for $7.80. They cut it for me into 10" X 16" pieces and finished the last step with 8" X 13" pieces ( I am exploring the Golden Mean in composition ). So I ended up with 31 separate painting surfaces. I covered them with primer. So far I find the surface very smooth and receptive to my acrylic paint. It is the best surface for the price I…See More

Painting Compulsion. How bout you

How often do you pick up. brush and paint? Since I started @ 3 years ago I try to paint everyday. I complete a painting a week at minimum and  often more. But if I am not painting I am studying, planning, preparing, or thinking about it. In my life I have never been a compulsive person, but for some reason this has become a compulsion. Is this normal for artists? How about you?See More

Color Cards

After 2 years of acrylic painting I finally decided to spend the effort to make color cards as Diane recommends and found it to be one of the best things I have done. It took roughly 8 hrs but it is by far the best method I have found to learn color mixing.  I have been using color wheels and value charts but color mixing was like hunt and peck typing, Now as I plan my painting, I can look at my reference and then select from my cards the colors that most closely match and immediately know…See More

"Beautiful. Your use of blending and colors capture the softness of the skin and of course having such a lovely subject doesn't hurt either. I agree with Deborah that the sparkle in her eyes make it come to life."
