Tulips in acrylic on Yupo paper that has a background of black gesso. Make it difficult to get any light coming through the petals. There's probably a way to do this when painting on black, but it was beyond me lol.

I love your experimenting! But they do look very light against the black! You could always do another layer of paint to cover the black a bit more.

Oh, and Linda, yes acrylic paints to have transparent colors! Different colors vary quite a bit in their transparency.

Hi Wanda -

I saw a recent video that covered this type of composition.  They suggested doing an undercoat of titanium white where you will be placing the brightest colours.  This gives a nice base for using transparent colours and glazes in particular, and is especially useful for back lighted translucent subjects.
