Blue Coffee Cup

Gouache (and acrylic) on Watercolor Paper. You may recognize this reference photo from Will Kemp. I have been wanting to try a new paint medium and substrate and not invest a lot of money into oils just yet since I don't have an actual studio to let paintings sit and dry. I bought an inexpensive set of Gouache paints and gave it a go. I will admit that the opaque nature of the paints was challenging, but I did not spend a ton of time on this. I was completely frustrated in not being able to create the background color I wanted with the Gouache colors I had, so I broke out my acrylics (raw umber and titanium white)for a redo of the background.

I can't add anything to what Sarah and Karen have said.  It's fun to try out different mediums to see how they work. One comment I've heard about painting mediums is to stay away from the lower price ranged items and splurge  and buy the higher end paints, etc. That way you get a "feel" for what the product can give you. (....who knows, maybe it was a manufacturer of a paint supply store who said that!!)  You did a lovely job of the coffee cup!

Nice job, Micki.  It sounds like you were brave in trying out a new medium - and your results are quite nice.  I like the blue of the cup and the way the oranges give depth to the inside.  It came out quite lovely in spite of the challenges you faced.

excellent Micki! Yes those are the challenges with guoache. They are very opaque, also they are not set when they dry, so if you rewet an area it will alter and mix with the paint below.

It is fun to experiment though! Finding that medium that just fits you is the goal!
